Please note that the Sustained Investigation and the Range of Approaches sections below are from two different students’ portfolios.

Sustained Investigation (Concentration) Statement

  1. my concentrations are about a series of superimpositions using two or more exposures to create a single image creating a relationship between animal and habitat. i tend to focus in the clarity of the quality of the image or images to be able to do multiple exposure. Blend several images into a collage and know where to position them. Do a poster portrait by creating it with a brush effect on the images. And convey the information in an appealing way to the audience by designing infographics
  2. the concept behind my concentration was building a relationship between two abstracts that are in common. I began to explore wth the lighting, and the quality of the image after the multiple exposure. After practicing with the right amount of lightning and transparence with the type of blending mode. i began to work with the idea of bringing two common things into one single image to convey unity.

Rationale for Score

  • The work conveys a sense of a sustained investigation, but the integration of the topic—"superimpositions using two or more exposures to create a single image creating a relationship between animal and habitat"—and the work is inadequately considered. The work appears to have separate focuses, one on animals, one on mythic/fantasy heroes, one on computer screenshots, and one on sports figures. Furthermore, while images 1 through 4 do superimpose two or more images to create one image, this approach is not successfully explored in images 6 through 12.
  • Decision making is lacking; the work appears inadequately thought out and insufficiently explored, as there appear to be four separate approaches.
  • A potentially engaging theme is present but is largely unsuccessful, as there seems to be no visual connection between the animal images 1 through 4, the fictional characters in images 6 through 8, and the sports figures in images 11 and 12.
  • The work shows a weak understanding or limited application of 2-D design principles. For example, the figure/ground relationships in images 1 through 5 appear unconsidered.
  • Digital images 6 through 8 demonstrate some technical competency, but design solutions are simplistic, indicating a limited application of 2-D design principles.
  • The work is mostly repetitive in composition and treatment. Note the repetition visible in the two sets of images: 1 through 5 and 6 through 8. A few pieces show slight signs of transformation or suggest growth, notably images 11 and 12.
  • The work appears to rely on the use of direct copies of published sources, and there is little student vision and transformation evident.
  • Overall, the work demonstrates marginal technical competence and awkward use of materials and media.

Rationale for Score

  • The work shows weak application of 2-D design principles (mostly repetition and balance) to a limited range of design problems (abstract patterns and close-up photography).
  • The ideas in the work are unoriginal (for example, images 2, 4, and 11); the work does not show an inventive use of the elements and principles of 2-D design.
  • There are repetitive compositions (for example, compare image 8 with image 12, image 7 with image 11, and image 5 with image 10).
  • The work does not clearly demonstrate a variety of intentions or approaches. The works are either based on close-up photography (images 3, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12) or abstract patterns created with line and shape (images 1, 2, 5, 6, and 10).
  • There is little that engages the viewer (images 1, 2, 4, and 7); the work does not convey much confidence in the use of materials (paint, pencil, and photography) or compositions (images 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8), although compositions in images 4 and 10 are somewhat more successful.
  • The work is generally awkward (images 1, 2, 4, and 5) and the photographs, such as images 7 and 8, appear out of focus and are not aided by manipulations and exposure. Overall, most works demonstrate marginal technical competence and use of materials and media.
