Funding for West Virginia Schools for May 2027 AP Exams
Fee-Reduced Students
“Fee-reduced students” qualify for the College Board fee reduction of $37 per exam. Schools are expected to forgo their $9 rebate for these students, bringing the exam cost to $53. For eligibility criteria, visit AP Exam Fee Reductions.
The State of West Virginia will provide additional funding of $53 per exam for fee-reduced students. After state funding is distributed, the cost to qualifying fee-reduced students for all AP Exams will be $0.
For students to qualify for this funding, their schools must apply for a fee waiver with the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE). Waivers are granted based on an individual student’s financial need.
Grants from WVDE will be sent to each county. Funding will then be sent to each school to enable said schools to directly pay College Board.
Standard-Fee Students
“Standard-fee students” don’t qualify for the College Board fee reduction. For these students, the State of West Virginia will pay $20 per exam. This brings the final fee down to $79.
The school orders the exams, and WVDE sends a grant to cover $20 per exam. No action is needed in AP Registration and Ordering for these exams. You will use the grant funding to pay the $20 per exam toward your invoice from College Board.
While the published fee for an AP Exam is $99, College Board only collects $90 from schools for each exam taken by standard-fee students. The additional $9 can be retained by schools as a rebate to help defray their administrative costs. Schools pay College Board the full $90 and use the WVDE grant funding to cover $20 of that payment, which allows them to charge students $79 per exam ($70 if the school forgoes the $9 rebate).

Steps for AP Coordinators
Before the Exams
- For your invoice to accurately reflect any fee reductions, the AP coordinator must indicate the fee reduction status for each eligible student in AP Registration and Ordering.
- For each student who is eligible for the College Board fee reduction, check the Reduced Fee box next to their name in the student roster.
- For students who aren't eligible for the fee reduction, no action is needed.
- Fee reduction status is indicated only once per student, not for each exam.
- If possible, indicate each student’s status by the time you submit your exam order. This ensures you have time to plan for and collect the appropriate exam fees.
- However, if you need more time to verify this information, the deadline to indicate students' fee reduction status in AP Registration and Ordering is April 30, 2027 (11:59 p.m. ET).
- Indicate to the West Virginia Department of Education the number of AP Exam waivers needed by accessing this form: 2027 West Virginia AP Fee Waiver Request Form. The deadline for submission is April 30, 2027. Please note that after this deadline you will be unable to make changes through the College Board and West Virginia fee waiver program.
- Fee waivers won’t cover late order fees, unused/canceled exam fees, or late-testing fees.
After the Exams
- Your invoice will be automatically generated and emailed to you after late-testing administration ends. At that point, you can also access and print your invoice through AP Registration and Ordering.
- Pay College Board the total amount due on your invoice. Payment must be postmarked by June 15, 2027.
