Virginia AP Exam Fee Assistance
Funding for Virginia Schools for May 2026 AP Exams
Fee-Reduced Students
“Fee-reduced students” qualify for the College Board fee reduction of $37 per exam. For eligibility criteria, visit AP Exam Fee Reductions.
In the Commonwealth of Virginia, public school students who qualify for free or reduced lunch benefits are eligible for additional AP Exam funding. If the student’s school participates in the Community Eligibility Program, eligibility will be determined by the school division using the family’s income.
For qualifying fee-reduced students, the Commonwealth of Virginia has appropriated funds for the purpose of covering all but $20 for AP Exam fees.
School divisions are responsible for providing eligible students and parents with notification of this financial assistance at the time of course enrollment and exam registration.
Resources
The Virginia Department of Education’s (VDOE) Office of Parental Engagement has created a flyer for school division use.
To assist school divisions with the fee reduction program, a technical support document is available for reference.
Standard-Fee Students
“Standard-fee students” don’t qualify for College Board fee reductions. The Commonwealth of Virginia won’t provide additional funding for these students.
Note: It remains a school-level decision whether to keep or forgo the $9 per exam school rebate from standard-fee students. For more information on rebate policy and procedures, please see State AP Exam Fee Assistance.

Steps for AP Coordinators
Before the Exams
- To receive funding, school divisions should designate a point of contact to complete the FY 2026 AP-IB-Cambridge Funding Form by December 5, 2025. School divisions need to submit the anticipated number of AP Exam registrations by fee-reduced students. VDOE will communicate the amount of funding allocated to each division through a grant award notification. Financial assistance provided by College Board will be factored into reimbursement amounts. Divisions will receive funding in February 2026.
- For your invoice to accurately reflect any fee reductions, the AP coordinator must indicate the fee reduction status for each eligible student in AP Registration and Ordering.
- For each student who is eligible for the College Board fee reduction, check the Reduced Fee box next to their name in the student roster.
- For students who aren't eligible for the fee reduction, no action is needed.
- Fee reduction status is indicated only once per student, not for each exam.
- If possible, indicate each student’s status by the time you submit your exam order. This ensures you have time to plan for and collect the appropriate exam fees.
- However, if you need more time to verify this information, the deadline to indicate students' fee reduction status in AP Registration and Ordering is April 30, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET).
After the Exams
- Your invoice will be automatically generated and emailed to you after late-testing administration ends. At that point, you can also access and print your invoice through AP Registration and Ordering.
- June 15, 2026, is the postmark deadline for payment due to College Board.
- In June 2026, school division points-of-contact will be asked to submit the actual number of completed AP Exams by eligible fee-reduced students after testing windows have closed. Unused funds should be returned to the VDOE by August 1, 2026.
