Reviewing Student Work and Progress

Reminders about AP Art and Design Digital Submission

  • Students are responsible for submitting their 3 portfolio components (Sustained Investigation Images, Sustained Investigation Written Evidence, and Selected Works) to the AP Program as final in the AP Digital Portfolio by the May 9, 2025, 8 p.m. ET deadline. However, it’s a best practice for teachers to set their own earlier deadlines for students to submit their portfolio components so teachers have ample time to review the work for plagiarism and confirm all portfolio components are submitted by the AP Program deadline.
  • If a student submits their 3 portfolio components in the AP Digital Portfolio and the teacher takes no action, the student's portfolio will automatically be submitted to the AP Program for scoring on May 9, 2025, 8 p.m. ET (as long as the AP coordinator previously ordered an exam for the student).
  • If there's a technical error, a teacher should return the impacted portfolio component(s) to the student. It's the teacher's responsibility to alert the student that they need to take action in the AP Digital Portfolio. The AP Digital Portfolio does not alert students if a portfolio component is returned to them. The student will need to resubmit their work in the AP Digital Portfolio by the AP Program deadline for it to be sent to the AP Program for scoring.

Note: Within the AP Digital Portfolio, you can review the overall progress of students within a class section, student work that’s in progress, and a student’s work that’s been submitted as final. The information on this page describes how to do each.

How to View Overall Progress of Students Within a Class Section

  1. From your AP Digital Portfolio homepage, select the portfolio type and class section you’d like to view. (You can also select the My Classes dropdown menu at the top right of your screen and choose the appropriate class section from there.)
  2. Under Class Summary select Progress.

  3. From the Progress page, you’ll see an overview of all students in this class section and their portfolio submission progress.

Important: Students can upload work in the AP Digital Portfolio even if an AP Exam hasn’t been ordered for them by the AP coordinator. However, work will only be sent to the AP Program for scoring if an AP Exam has been ordered for the student.

  • If the student’s name is in a white box and their AP ID is listed beneath it, it means an AP Art and Design Portfolio Exam has been ordered for them.
  • If you see “Not Taking Exam” or “No Selection” under a student’s name on the Progress page, it means they do not have an exam ordered for them and it won’t be sent to the AP Program for scoring. You and your student should work with the AP coordinator to ensure an AP Exam is ordered for them.

From the Progress page, you’ll see the status for each student’s portfolio components in the class section.

  • Square: Student hasn’t started working on the portfolio component.

  • Triangle: Student started working on the portfolio component, but it hasn’t been submitted as final.

  • Checkmark: Student submitted the portfolio component as final.

How to View a Student’s Work in Progress

You can view students’ work that’s been uploaded but not yet submitted as final from the individual portfolio component pages.

To view students’ work in progress:

  1. From the Progress page, open the portfolio component you’d like to view.
  2. From the portfolio component, scroll to Student Submissions.
  3. From there, you’ll see a list of students who have work in progress within that portfolio component. Select View Details next to the student’s name that you’d like to view.
  4. An Activity Feed will open, showing the activity that the student has taken, along with a link to their most recent work in progress. Click the link to review their work in progress.

If a student has submitted a portfolio component as final, under Student Submissions it’ll say File Submitted and the date of submission next to the student’s name.

Note: You can only report a portfolio component for plagiarism or return a portfolio component to a student once it’s been submitted as final by the student. You can’t take these actions for work that’s in progress but not yet submitted.
