Extended Time

Learn about extended time accommodations for digital AP Exams.

Students will receive their approved amount of extended time within the digital exam. Extended time will be applied per section and/or part of the exam based on the student’s specific approval.

Starting with the 2025 digital AP Exams, students with College Board–approved accommodations for extended time will now have the optional ability in the Bluebook testing application to move to the next section or end testing before their full amount of extended time expires.

More details about this update:

  • Standard testing time must be completed.
  • Once the exam begins, only the student can waive their unused extended time, and they’ll do so directly through Bluebook during the exam.
  • If a student waives their unused extended time, they won’t be able to return to view, change, or submit answers.
  • Students should be encouraged to use as much of their extended time as they need, and AP coordinators and proctors should still be prepared for students to use their full, approved testing time.

How extended time will work in Bluebook:

For digital AP Exams (fully digital and hybrid digital), students approved for extended time will be able to move forward in Bluebook like this:

  • On the Check Your Work screen, which students see after completing the last question of an exam part or section, a Next button will appear. The button won’t be clickable until after the standard time for that part or section has passed.
  • The Next button will only appear for students with extended time.
  • After a student clicks the Next button, they’ll see a message explaining that they have more time left and won’t be able to return to the part or section if they want to move on. To progress to the next part or section, they’ll need to click the checkbox to confirm that they know that they cannot return, and then click Next again.
  • All students will need to see the Congratulations screen at the end of the exam to know their exam responses have been submitted.
