Host an AP Workshop

Course workshops are deep dives into a single AP course. Districts and states may host one-day and multi-day workshops for their teachers for all AP courses. 

Please note that AP Seminar and AP Research have a training requirement for teachers new to the course(s). These course workshops are only available in a 30-hour format.  

Workshop Topics Covered

The following topics are addressed in all AP course workshops:

• Course and Exam Description (CED) and Course Planning: Discuss developing a semester and/or yearlong instructional plan that incorporates all units, topics, and skills of the course, as referenced in the CED. 
• Expanding AP Opportunities: Discuss strategies to create a supportive AP environment for all students and encourage students from all backgrounds to participate in AP. 
• Strategies and Pedagogical Tools: Identify instructional strategies and tools to teach the content and skills outlined in the CED. 
• AP Classroom: Explore how AP Classroom can be used to develop lesson plans that hone each skill/practice and reinforce topic and skill connections. 
• Assess and Reflect: Practice interpreting data within the Instructional Planning Report to identify student strengths and weaknesses and reflect on the implications for instruction.

Each Achieving AP Access for All workshop is customized for teachers and administrators in a single district or school to explore how to create an AP program devoted to improving access to advanced academics for students from all populations.

Quick Facts

• Audience: Up to 25 district or building administrators and AP teachers. Administrators and teachers will attend sessions together to collaborate on the shared access policy.
• Format: Available in person or online. 
• Length: 6 hours
• Facilitator: Endorsed College Board AP professional learning consultant.
• When: Available at any time throughout the year.

Workshop Description

In this workshop, participants will:

• Identify policies, procedures, and tools that can be used to increase access among the AP teacher and student populations. 
• Discuss curriculum adjustments and instructional strategies to recruit and retain students who have traditionally not had access to AP courses. 
• Identify district-, school-, and classroom-level policies and practices that enhance or restrict student opportunities to take AP courses and exams.

This 3-hour workshop helps teachers understand which skills are critical for college and career success. It’s an overview of skills that intersect across all AP courses and exams. 

Specific topics include:  

• Teaching for understanding and transfer  
• Understanding AP skills and practices  
• Practice and feedback
• Using AP resources to build skill development  

This workshop may be expanded to a 6-hour workshop that includes opportunities for teachers and teams to plan ways to build skill development within and across the curriculum.

During this 3-hour interactive workshop, teachers will:  

• Understand how to assess evidence-based written arguments and the reasoning process  
• Identify common student misunderstandings and how to help correct them
• Discover how AP Exam rubrics can be used to reinforce and develop argumentation skills
• Learn instructional strategies that can be used to help students develop evidence-based written arguments  

Teachers will have time to collaborate with colleagues from other AP courses to explore how these factors can be introduced and reinforced in AP courses across disciplines.

By taking this 3-hour workshop, teachers will gain a better understanding of how students develop quantitative mathematical and scientific arguments and how related reasoning processes are embedded in their own and other AP courses.  

During this interactive workshop, teachers will:  

• Understand how students develop quantitative arguments and how to assess them
• Learn instructional strategies to help students develop quantitative arguments  
• Identify common student misunderstandings and how to help correct them  
• Discover how AP Exam rubrics can be used to reinforce and develop quantitative arguments
• Learn how related reasoning processes are embedded in AP courses

Teachers will have time to collaborate with colleagues from other AP courses to explore how these factors can be introduced and reinforced in AP courses across disciplines.

• Identify common student misunderstandings and how to help correct them  
• Discover how AP Exam rubrics can be used to reinforce and develop students’ abilities to analyze and interpret quantitative data
• Learn instructional strategies to help students develop their ability to analyze and interpret quantitative data  

Teachers will have time to collaborate with colleagues from other AP courses to explore how these factors can be introduced and reinforced in AP courses across disciplines.

This 6-hour workshop introduces the design and pedagogy of Pre-AP and empowers participants to apply Pre-AP principles to their own content and grade level.

Participants will:

• Examine the Pre-AP mission of access for all students

• Develop a shared instructional vision across content areas using the Pre-AP shared principles

• Experience and analyze model lessons from Pre-AP instructional resources

• Collaborate to design classroom activities that build readiness and meet the needs of all learners

Participants collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to explore how the shared principles can be used to support instruction, impact student learning, and build AP readiness.
