AP Free-Response Question Release: What’s Changing

Starting with the 2027 AP Exam administration, free-response questions (FRQs) will no longer be released two days after each subject's exam. Instead, all FRQs will be released on the same day in early June. The June release will include two full FRQ sets for most subjects in 2027. 

Why is the FRQ release timing changing? 

In July 2026, the AP Program announced a change to exam start times for the 2027 AP Exam administration, aligning start times by time zone to protect the security of exam content.

That same commitment to security has also led the AP Program to rethink how and when AP Exam free-response questions are released each year. 

Holding on to the exam content until all AP testing is complete maximizes the AP Program’s ability to assign different exam versions across time zones without revealing those specifics.

When can I discuss AP Exam free-response content with my students? 

FRQs will not be available until the June release, which for many schools falls near or after the end of the school year. If your school is still in session when FRQs are released in June, you’ll be able to review FRQs with your students at that time. 

Once free-response content is released on AP Central in June, you can discuss it with your students. However, not all free-response content is released. Any free-response content that’s not released may never be discussed, copied, or shared in any way. As has always been the case, the free-response section of exams used during later exam administrations may never be discussed. 

Does this affect every AP subject? 

This change applies to every AP Exam with a free-response section.
