2019-20 AP Course Audit: What You’ll Need to Do

To give you more time to familiarize yourself with the new resources and supports that launched in August, you won’t be required to submit a syllabus for course authorization until the 2020-21 school year.

If you’re teaching AP Italian Language and Culture in 2019-20, you’ll need to:

  • Submit an AP Course Audit Form
  • Download the AP Italian Language and Culture unit guide

These steps will ensure that your course appears on the AP Course Ledger and that you have access to online score reports in July 2020.

Designing Your AP Italian Language and Culture Course


The AP Italian Language and Culture course should be designed to develop student proficiencies in the three modes of communication (Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational) defined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Preparing for the 21st Century. Coursework should provide students with opportunities to demonstrate their proficiency in the intermediate to pre-advanced range as described in the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners. AAdditionally, the course should use authentic print, audio, and audiovisual resources.

Students enrolling in AP Italian Language and Culture are typically in their fourth or fifth year of language study, or have had equivalent experience with the language.

The key document for each AP course is the course and exam description. Start by reviewing it to understand the objectives and expectations of the AP course and exam.

This is the core document for this course and is updated for the 2019-20 school year. New unit guides clearly lay out suggested thematic course content and skills and recommend sequencing and pacing for them throughout the year. The CED also more clearly outlines how material will be assessed on the exam, provides instructional strategies, and gives information on the AP Program in general.

AP Italian Language and Culture curricular requirements:

  • The teacher uses Italian almost exclusively in class and encourages students to do likewise.
  • Instructional materials include a variety of authentic audio, visual, and audiovisual sources and authentic written and print texts.
  • The course provides opportunities for students to engage in interdisciplinary course content and develop skills through the 6 required themes.
  • The course provides opportunities for students to demonstrate an understanding of the products, practices, and perspectives of the target cultures.
  • The course provides opportunities for students to make cultural comparisons.
  • The course provides opportunities for students to practice and develop the skills in each skill category:
    • Skill Category 1: Comprehend written, audio, audiovisual, and visual text (Interpretive Mode)
    • Skill Category 2: Make interdisciplinary and cultural connections (Interpretive Mode)
    • Skill Category 3: Interpret the content of written and audio text (Interpretive Mode)
    • Skill Category 4: Make meanings from words and expressions (Interpretive Mode)
    • Skill Category 5: Communicate interpersonally by speaking with others (Interpersonal Mode)
    • Skill Category 6: Communicate interpersonally by writing to others (Interpersonal Mode)
    • Skill Category 7: Communicate through spoken presentations (Presentational Mode)
    • Skill Category 8: Communicate through written presentations (Presentational Mode)
  • The course prepares students to use the target language in real-life settings.

AP Italian Language and Culture resource requirements:

  • The school ensures that each student has a copy of printed course materials for individual use inside and outside of the classroom.
  • The school provides audio and video equipment and materials that allow for ongoing opportunities to develop proficiency across the 3 modes of communication. This equipment can include video or DVD players or computers, language labs, handheld digital recorders, iPads, or compact disc players. Chromebooks can be used during the course and may be used on the exam if permission is granted by the College Board by March 1.

Because world language instruction focuses on developing proficiencies, which can be accomplished in multiple ways with or without a specific textbook, the AP Italian Language and Culture course does not have a list of example textbooks that meet the curricular requirements of AP Italian Language and Culture.
