Online Resources Recommended by AP Teachers

We surveyed AP Calculus teachers about what online resources they recommend, and the list below comes directly from their responses. The list also includes teacher descriptions of the resources. This is not a comprehensive list, nor is it an endorsement of any of these resources by the College Board.

DeltaMath $  

  • Self-directed student practice; instructional videos for students available in paid version
  • Provides self-checking, randomized short-answer and multiple-choice problems for Calculus topics, including scaffolded reasoning with justifications. Teachers select and assign questions and can see student progress. The free version is very robust and doesn’t have advertisements, though you can pay a fee for additional features.

CalcMedic  

  • Online instruction tutorials/resource pages for teachers
  • Lesson activities for almost every skill/topic in AP Calculus AB. These include an exploratory worksheet, followed by a practice worksheet with a box for taking notes in the middle. “The resources are aligned with the CED and cover everything!”

Desmos  

  • Online simulation; instructional videos and explorations for students
  • This resource provides premade lessons from Desmos or other teachers. They are editable or can even make one from scratch with built-in opportunities for students to collaborate and discuss. Helps students to visualize and explore abstract concepts.

GeoGebra

  • Online simulation; instructional videos and explorations for students
  • Dynamic mathematics software that “makes explaining concepts easier.” Offers activities, simulations, and lessons. Also has authoring tool to make interactive learning resources.

Wolfram Demonstrations

  • Online simulation
  • Offers interactive educational demonstrations to help students to make sense of abstract concepts.

3Blue1Brown

  • Instructional videos for students
  • YouTube channel that provides a visual approach for calculus that “extends learning past procedures and into conceptual ideas.” Answers a lot of “why” questions students have.

TI in Focus AP Calculus

  • Instructional videos for teachers
  • Library of released 2017, 2018, 2019 FRQs for Calculus AB and BC. Includes videos that teach how to grade the questions and extensions for teaching the questions.

Calculus in Motion $

  • Online simulation; instructional videos for students
  • Provides simulations that help students to “see” Calculus. Provides animations for many concepts in the course, including animations from AP Calculus AB and BC free-response questions. GeoGebra must be on the computer for the animations to work.

Khan Academy: AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC

  • Self-directed student practice; instructional videos for students
  • Provides instruction and assessments for AP Calculus that students can do on their own. They receive immediate feedback, hints, and links to video explanations. They’re also able to “work toward mastery of skills” and “the level of rigor of the questions is appropriate.” An account is needed to join a classroom or track progress.

Albert.io: AP Calculus AB-BC $  

  • Self-directed student practice; instructional videos for students; instructional videos for teachers; online instruction tutorials/resource pages for teachers
  • Online resource with an extensive bank of multiple-choice and free-response questions. The feedback to students is immediate and thorough. Some use resource “to give lab quizzes and spiral topics discussed earlier in the year.”

FlippedMath

  • Online instruction tutorials/resource pages for teachers; instructional videos for students
  • Offers videos for AP Calculus AB lessons along with printable notes and worksheets. Can be used for all math classes. “Helps tremendously with distance learning.”

Symbolab  

  • Online symbolic calculator; self-directed student practice and quiz generator
  • Online calculator that performs symbolic algebra and calculus operations. No account is needed to use the calculator, but is needed to use the online practice.

WeBWork $  

  • Online homework system
  • Comes with online generated problems with computational input that are auto graded. “Great college-level practice problems with instant feedback on correctness.” Hosted by the MAA. No account created needed to use the calculator, but is needed to use the online practice.
