AP’s Commitment to Offering a New Course
Beginning in the 2019-20 school year, the AP World History: Modern course will span from c. 1200 to the present.
For schools and students interested in AP coursework that covers 10,000 years of world history, the AP Program is committed to offering an additional AP world history course—AP World History: Ancient. (Please note: This is a working course title; the official name will be decided in consultation with educators.)
Next Steps
To develop an AP World History: Ancient course, exam, and accompanying resources, the AP Program will first need to confirm that colleges are committed to awarding credit for an additional AP world history exam, and that high schools are interested in offering two full, separate AP world history courses. The standards we’ll use to gauge support are similar to those recently met by high schools and colleges interested in a new AP Computer Science Principles course and exam, which launched in 2016. Advocates for the development of new AP courses in other disciplines, such as engineering, are currently using similar standards as they survey interest among postsecondary and higher education communities.
To verify support for the new AP world history course, we’re asking interested high schools and colleges to submit the forms linked below. We’ll provide updates about the responses we’ve received.
High School Interest Form
A minimum of 2,500 high schools (approximately 15% of all that offer Advanced Placement) must attest to their commitment to offering a new AP World History: Ancient course and exam, in addition to AP World History: Modern.
To do this, the high school administrator must:
- Download the High School Interest Form for AP World History: Ancient (.pdf/477KB).
- Complete and sign the form.
- Send the signed form electronically to apancient@collegeboard.org or mail it to:

College and University Credit Commitment Form
A minimum of 100 colleges and universities must confirm the specific course credit they would offer for AP World History: Ancient exam scores. At least 80 of these institutions must be among those that receive the majority of AP World History scores. These standards ensure that a significant number of students will benefit from the development of this course and receive credit for qualifying AP Exam scores.
The history department chair of the college or university must:
- Download the Credit Commitment Form for AP World History: Ancient (.pdf/475KB).
- Complete and sign the form.
- Send the signed form electronically to apancient@collegeboard.org or mail it to:
