Online Resources Recommended by AP Teachers

We surveyed AP Human Geography teachers about what online resources they recommend, and the list below comes directly from their responses. The list also includes teacher descriptions of the resources. This is not a comprehensive list, nor is it an endorsement of any of these resources by the College Board.

Albert.io $  

  • Self-directed student practice; instructional videos for students.
  • Gives students more practice answering questions and provides teachers with an easy way to score and assess mastery.

ArcGIS Online  

  • Self-directed student practice; online instructions tutorials/resources pages for teachers
  • Offers thousands of maps that can be used in the classroom and to supplement AP Human Geography content. Both students and teachers can create maps and story maps. Account creation is needed in order to create and save maps.

The Choices Program — Brown University (Geography) $

  • Self-directed student practice; instructional videos for students; instructional videos for teachers
  • Program offers articles and videos related to most of the AP Human Geography content featured in the CED. Provides some free articles and videos from the past; there is a cost for the most up-to-date and in-depth resources.

Gapminder

  • Online simulation; self-directed student practice; instructional videos for students; resource pages for teachers
  • Great source of data, graphs, charts and maps focusing on economic development and population. “Visuals help students grasp difficult content within the course.”

Geoguessr

  • Self-directed student practice
  • “Use Google Street View to present a game where students are plopped somewhere on the world map and have to guess where they are. Fun way to see the world and practice spotting key features of the cultural landscape.”

  • Activities are adaptable to be completed face to face or via a learning platform.

National Council for Geographic Education $  

  • Online instruction tutorials/resource pages for teachers
  • Provides questions organized by topic from the CED. “Beneficial because there are many questions to choose from.” The site also provides bell ringers on a weekly basis.

Population Reference Bureau

  • Self-directed student practice; instructional videos for students; instructional videos for teachers
  • Provides a range of resources, from videos, online articles, and hands-on activities. Most of the resources focus on population and migration, there are connections to economic development, urbanization, and political organization of space.

Mapping Our World  

  • Instructional videos for students; online instruction tutorials/resource pages for teachers
  • Designed to enhance GIS (Geographic Information Science) learning for all levels of learning. Lessons are designed to teach content was well as functions of GIS tools.

US Census Bureau

  • Self-directed student practice; online instructions tutorials/resources pages for teachers
  • In-depth website that features a vast array of data related to population geography. Multiple data sets “enable students to create maps at the census tract and census block scales.”

Vox Borders Video Series

  • Instructional videos for students; instructional videos for teachers
  • “Great, short videos that cover all different aspects of standards from AP Human Geography. The videos make concepts more relevant with real world examples and clear explanations.”

World Factbook

  • Self-directed student practice
  • Serves as a reference source for every sovereign country in the world today. Published by the Central Intelligence Agency.
