Additional Credit-by-Exam Opportunities

To broaden access to high-quality academic and performance pathways, the AP Program encourages consideration of select assessments that provide additional opportunities for credit, placement, and advanced study.

Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM)

AP Music Theory students may be interested in further examinations focused on music performance. The AP Program recommends that educators and students consider the suite of music performance examinations administered by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). Specifically, students who earn scores of 3 or higher on AP Music Theory may use this result to satisfy the prerequisite for ABRSM’s most advanced music performance exams—the exams ABRSM categorizes at levels 6, 7, and 8. In other words, AP Music Theory students who earn a score of 3 or higher are categorized by ABRSM as having passed a level 5 Music Theory exam, and thus can move directly from AP Music Theory into taking ABRSM’s level 6, 7, and 8 performance exams.

AP encourages colleges and universities across the United States to recognize, through credit, ABRSM’s suite of advanced music theory and performance examinations, specifically Grade 8 in Music Performance/Practical Music and the ARSM in Music Performance. ABRSM is recognized by colleges and universities in the United States and internationally.

AP endorses the National Examinations in World Languages (NEWL), developed by the American Councils for International Education, and recommends them to our member institutions to use for credit and placement in the following world languages: Arabic, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian. These proficiency-based exams are designed to assess students’ skills in world languages considered critical by government and business in the 21st century.
