Nine AP Exams Go Fully Digital in May 2025

Learn About Digital AP Exams

For the May 2025 AP Exam administration, the exams for nine AP subjects will be delivered digitally. Paper exams cannot be ordered for these subjects, unless students have approved accommodations requiring paper testing.

Here’s a list of the AP subjects and information to help you start planning for a digital administration.

2025 Digital AP Exam Subjects

  • AP African American Studies (first year this exam is available to all U.S. schools)

  • AP Computer Science Principles

  • AP English Language and Composition

  • AP English Literature and Composition

  • AP European History

  • AP Psychology (first year this exam is offered in digital format)

  • AP Seminar

  • AP United States History

  • AP World History: Modern

Eligible Schools

All schools that order AP Exams in these nine subjects must administer them digitally starting in May 2025. This includes schools that have not previously been able to order digital AP Exams: schools in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Territories, and schools and test centers outside of the United States.

Note: AP African American Studies is available in the United States only in the 2024-25 academic year, and available internationally in 2025-26.

About Digital AP Exams

Digital exams are the future of AP testing. They remove the need to manage paper exam booklets on exam day and reduce the risk of exam security issues and lost exam responses.

Bluebook and Test Day Toolkit

  • Students will use the Bluebook™ testing app to take digital exams. AP coordinators and proctors will administer digital exams using the Test Day Toolkit web application. Visit the Bluebook website for more information.

  • Educators and students can download the Bluebook app and try a test preview for available subjects to explore the tools in the app.

  • Students can use the Bluebook testing app on a wide range of devices; Bluebook requirements are typical of other applications used in schools.

Accommodations

  • Accommodations such as extended time are provided in Bluebook.

  • All Bluebook exams are configured to work for students who have approved accommodations to test with assistive technology.

Digital vs. Paper Exams

  • Like paper exams, digital exams are proctored and administered in school.

  • Digital exams include the same number of sections, number and type of questions, question choice (if applicable), and timing as the paper exams.

  • Students can go back within a section or part to review or complete previous questions. As on the paper exam, students may not return to parts within a section that have already been completed.

  • Digital exams require the same number of proctors as paper exams and share the same seating requirements.
