Online Resources Recommended by AP Teachers

We surveyed AP African American Studies teachers about which online resources they recommend, and the list below comes directly from their responses. The list also includes teacher descriptions of the resources. This is not a comprehensive list, nor is it an endorsement of any of these resources by College Board. 

The Plainest Demands of Justice: Documents for Dialogue on the African American Experience

  • This curriculum is designed to connect teachers and students with those who strove and continue to strive for a greater realization of the promises outlined in the Declaration of Independence. 
  • There are 7 chronological primary source lessons covering the colonial era to the present day. 
  • There is a culminating assessment where students choose a topic to research and present their findings to the class, demonstrating how the work to uphold founding principles continues in the present day. 

Great Zimbabwe National Monument 

  • This video shows the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, once inhabited by the Bantu civilization of the Shona between the 11th and 15th centuries. 

African Origins and Adaptations in African American Music 

  • This website chronicles the influence of African American culture in music from 1600 to the present.
