Students can take the exam on a school device assigned to them (1-to-1), a shared device, or a personal device.

Operating Systems and Hardware Specifications

Windows and Mac laptops and desktops, school-managed Chromebooks, and iPads with keyboards are supported if they meet technical specifications.

Windows

School-managed and personal Windows laptops and desktops are supported.

Supported operating systems are Windows 10 and 11 (Home, Professional, Educational, and Enterprise). Windows 10 in S mode is not supported.    

Minimum hardware specifications:

  • 1 GHz processor
  • 2 GB RAM (64-bit) or 1 GB RAM (32-bit)
  • 250 MB free hard drive space for one exam (plus 100 MB for each additional exam)

Note: The EXE installer and detailed instructions are available on the CB Digital Exams app installation website. MSI and MSIX installers are not available for this year’s AP Exam administration. Call tech support at 877-274-6474 if you need help using the EXE installer.

Mac

School-managed and personal Mac laptops and desktops are supported.

Supported operating systems are MacOS 10.11-10.15; 11.0+.

Minimum hardware specifications:

  • 1 GHz processor (Intel and Apple M1)
  • 2 GB RAM (64-bit) or 1 GB RAM (32-bit)
  • 400 MB free hard drive space for one exam (plus 100 MB for each additional exam)

Chromebooks

School-managed Chromebooks from 2017 or later are supported. They must be run in kiosk mode. Students cannot test on personal Chromebooks.

Supported operating systems are Chrome OS v83+.

Requires at least 150 MB of storage for one exam (plus 50 MB for each additional exam).

iPads

School-managed and personal iPads are supported. Students are required to test with physical keyboards.

Supported models:

  • iPad Pro
  • iPad Air or later
  • iPad with Retina display (5th Generation or later)
  • iPad Mini 4 or later

Supported operating systems are iPadOS 13.4 or later.

Requires at least 150 MB of storage for one exam (plus 100 MB for each additional exam).

Hardware Guidelines

Testing devices and peripherals should meet these guidelines.

Monitors and Screen Displays

  • Minimum laptop screen size: 10 inches
  • Minimum tablet size: 8 inches
  • Minimum screen resolution: 1024 x 768
  • Second monitor not supported

External Mice and Keyboards

An external keyboard is required for iPad. External keyboards and mice are allowed for other devices. Wired peripherals in good working order are recommended. Bluetooth mice and keyboards are allowed but should be fully charged to last the duration of the exam.

Power

Test-taking devices must hold a charge for at least four hours.
