Score Rationale

  • The work demonstrates some investigation of visual concepts such as line quality (image 3), light and shade (image 6), rendering of form (image 2), and the illusion of depth (image 5), but the investigation does not advance beyond a weak level.
  • Most of the compositions are centrally focused (see images 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 12). A broader investigation of drawing approaches might have explored additional compositional strategies.
  • The ideas in the work are unoriginal (see images 4, 5, and 6), and the work does not show an inventive use of the elements (line, shape, color, and value) and principles of design.
  • Images 3 and 11 are beginning to explore more original ideas and are more effective compositions, as well.
  • The work does not clearly demonstrate a variety of intentions or approaches. Many of the works depict animals or fantasy creatures from a frontal perspective (see images 1, 2, 4, 7, 10, and 12). More variety, such as the landscape (image 5) and the portrait (image 8), would make this Range of Approaches section more effective.
  • There is little about the work that is engaging; the work lacks confidence (see images 4, 8, 10, and 11).
  • The work is generally awkward. It demonstrates marginal technical competence and awkward use of materials and media, such as paint (image 4), pastel (image 6), and pencil (images 8 and 10). The use of pen in image 3 to create shading and to depict shadow is more effective.
