Curricular and Resource Requirements

Your course must fulfill these requirements.

AP Spanish Literature and Culture curricular requirements:

  • The teacher uses Spanish almost exclusively in class and encourages students to do likewise.
  • The course is structured to incorporate the entire reading list published in the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Course and Exam Description.
  • The course develops each of the 6 required themes in relation to the works on the required reading list: Las sociedades en contacto, La construcción del género, El tiempo y el espacio, Las relaciones interpersonales, La dualidad del ser, La creación literaria.
  • The course provides opportunities for students to develop the skills in the following skill categories:
    • Skill Category 1: Analyze and/or interpret literary texts and audio sources in the target language.
    • Skill Category 2: Make connections between a literary text and non-literary text or an aspect of culture.
    • Skill Category 3: Comparing literary texts including comparisons among required texts and non-required texts.
    • Skill Category 4: Compare a text to artistic representations.
    • Skill Category 5: Argumentation (to produce short responses, essays, and presentations analyzing literary texts).
    • Skill Category 6: Language and Conventions with an emphasis on applying literary terminology.
    • Skill Category 7: Engage in discussions about literary texts within and beyond the classroom setting.

AP Spanish Literature and Culture resource requirements:

  • The school ensures that each student has a copy of the works being read, for individual use inside and outside of the classroom.
  • The school ensures that students have access to a school or public library that includes works of prose, poetry, fiction, and drama by a wide range of Peninsular and Latin American authors.
  • The school provides audio and video equipment and materials that allow for ongoing opportunities to relate artistic representations and audiovisual materials to the course content and develop proficiency across the 3 modes of communication. This equipment can include video or DVD players, computers or tablets, language labs, or compact disc players.

Example Textbook List

Because world language instruction targets proficiency building, which can be accomplished in multiple ways with or without a specific textbook, the AP Spanish Literature and Culture course does not have a list of example textbooks that meet the curricular requirements of AP Spanish Literature and Culture.
