Online Resources Recommended by AP Teachers

We surveyed AP Japanese Language and Culture teachers about what online resources they recommend, and the list below comes directly from their responses. The list also includes teacher descriptions of the resources. This is not a comprehensive list, nor is it an endorsement of any of these resources by the College Board.

Coscom

  • Self-directed student practice; online instructions for teachers
  • Provides online reading and listening practice using current issues in Japan. The reading section has kanji and hiragana writing as well as vocabulary lists. The self- checking comprehension quizzes are “very useful for students’ practice when they are distance learning.”

Easy Japanese – Learn Japanese from the Street!

  • Instructional videos for teachers
  • Videos of authentic street interviews on various topics with script (Kana and Romaji) and English subtitles.

Hirogaru

  • Online instructions/resources for teachers
  • The site has 12 cultural topics with authentic videos. Each topic has various articles including audio and self- checking questions. The articles can be read with or without ruby. Students can upload their comments as well.

Japanese.io

  • Self-directed student practice; online instructions/resources for teachers
  • Offers various authentic reading materials. Each book comes with dictionary reference functions. The proficiency levels are indicated for better selection.

JPLANG

  • Self-directed student practice; online instructions for teachers
  • Offers various reading practices including grammar, new vocabulary lessons, and supplemental materials. Students can exercise each topic. There are also a variety of videos for conversational practice.

MATCHA

  • Online instructions tutorials/resources pages for teachers
  • Articles about tourism, food, and trends in Japan with many photos and Furigana. Choose either 日本語 or やさしい日本語.

MLC

  • Self-directed student practice; online instructions/resources for teachers
  • Provides online listening practice with self-checking questions. Teacher can utilize the material as conversational exercises as well.

Nagoya University

  • Self-directed student practice; online instructions resources for teachers
  • The online study materials “cover grammar, kanji, and listening comprehension with self-checking questions. Great distance learning tool.”

News in Slow Japanese

  • Online instructions tutorials/resources pages for teachers
  • Articles with sound files and vocabulary list on various topics. English translations pop up. Each article has a video link.

News Web Easy

  • Self-directed student practice; online instructions/resources for teachers
  • Offers the current news in Japan with “easy Japanese words.” There is a choice for kanji reading with ruby or without. Students can practice reading and listening.

NHK for school

  • Instructional videos for students; online instructions for teachers
  • This website covers a variety of topics. Each video includes scripts. Great resource for practicing for culture presentation.

日本トークNippon Talk

  • Online instructions tutorials/resources pages for teachers
  • Blog-like articles with photos, Furigana and translations on various topics

Reading Tutor

  • Online reading tool for students
  • Students can use this online tool as a dictionary.

Satori Reader $  

  • Online instructions tutorials/resources pages for teachers
  • Conversations, articles, and stories with sound, translation, and explanation of phrases and grammar. Free for limited articles/stories.

Wasabi

  • Self-directed student practice; online instructions for teachers
  • Useful authentic listening materials such as radio podcasts. There are audio files in four speech speeds that give students more opportunity to practice listening skills. It also provides scripts for deeper understanding.
