The Advanced Placement® Advocates program engages AP teachers in the effort to provide access to opportunity for students across the country.

AP teachers know better than anyone the value of the AP Program to their students’ lives. The AP Advocates program creates a cadre of AP teachers to make the case for protecting and expanding AP in their schools and communities.

AP Advocates:

  • Initiate, moderate, and analyze online teacher discussions about education issues and use this information to develop policy recommendations.
  • Present leading policymakers with teacher views on and solutions for access to opportunity.
  • Collaborate with other AP Advocates and the College Board's government relations team and program staff in developing policy.
  • Serve as local spokespeople for teachers’ ideas and perspectives at events and in the media, including writing op-eds and letters to the editor.


Since 2014, over 1,200 advocates from 26 states have been trained.

Their outreach includes:

  • Presentations on the benefits of AP, AP Potential, and PSAT/NMSQT at local city council meetings, the Florida Governors Summit on Education, the California Assembly Higher Education Committee, and more.
  • Calls, letters, and emails to over 65 state representatives and 12 federal officials, including Senator Mark Kirk (D-IL), Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA), and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX).
  • One-on-one meetings with local, state, and federal representatives to advance AP in their states.
  • Social media campaigns that have been featured on local radio stations.

What’s Next?

Our goal is to expand this program to other states, seek recommendations from teachers for additional members, and increase the opportunity for AP Advocates to affect policy changes at the state and national levels. If you are an AP teacher with two or more years of experience, consider becoming an AP Advocate.
